The Lighter Side of Dark…
I’m not sure what it was about January 2020 that made it feel so dark. Perhaps it’s the excessive reports of diseases infecting our world like coronavirus and Flu B. Maybe, it has something to do with an entire continent being ablaze. Whatever the case may be, I want to review something a little lighter then the usual dark.
Hazbin Hotel is an awesome combination of cartoon Princess movies and black comedy. Don’t be turned off by the Princess song that starts the episode. In a matter of seconds we move from cutesy to corrupt as we begin to see the daily lives of the residents of hell.
Charlie, princess of hell, is the central character in this series. Her goal is to try and reform the damned of hell through the Happy Hotel. Unlike most of the residents of hell, she’s very happy go lucky. She experiences push back at every turn but remains motivated to succeed.
Vaggie is Charlie’s special friend. One of the many souls that ended up in Hell, she is the voice of reality for Charlie. Very protective of her friend, Vaggie is quickly triggered by other characters.
Angel Dust is easily the crudest of the main characters. He is the first resident of Charlie’s reform hotel. Angel Dust is known throughout hell as a adult film star.
Alastor, also known as the Radio Demon, is the first investor in the Happy Hotel. Known to be a powerful demon in Hell, Vaggie asks Charlie to be careful making a deal with him.
In the end…
Hazbin Hotel isn’t a children’s Saturday morning cartoon show. It’s very adult and makes jabs at race, sex, sexual orientation, the list goes on. That being said, the animation is amazing and the characters are well developed. Personally, Alastor is my favorite. The radio announcer voice and the fourth wall break is the type of creepy cool I like!
While there is no second episode on the horizon, the pilot shows a lot of potential. With luck, Vivziepop will be announce a potential release this year.
I give Hazbin Hotel a 4 out of 5 Cthulhus.(4 / 5)
