A comparison

A little after watching Into The Dark, I saw this anthology horror movie, The Things That Haunt Us. There is a really similar story in it, but it does things differently enough that both are worth a watch. So this entry on the Hulu series will be a little revenge horror comparison.

Warning: This episode deals with sexual assault.

Basic Plot

Keeping it spoiler free

Women spend the night prying secrets and exacting punishment from questionable men.

How it’s handled

So both deal with these topics fairly well. It’s nice going through a story dealing with sexual assault and not going full I Spit on Your Grave graphic.

Treehouse: Well this comes off like a piece meant to both humanize assailants and act like a revenge fantasy which confused me halfway. I honestly thought that maybe the women had the wrong man and were just torturing an innocent man.

I can’t tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Sexual assault and rape usually have a “I can’t believe this person would do that” attached to them. This doubt and attitude of denial creates the problem of how one deals with rape. But on the other hand, this plays as revenge porn. We shouldn’t feel so attached to someone who doesn’t even feel like an anti-hero.

The ending was also . . . weird . . .

Smile: The focus on this story isn’t the scumbag. The ending to this story comes off powerful, probably because we didn’t care about the dick. It’s hard to talk about without spoiling, but the pace of this story slowly unfolds so things dawn on you as the story progresses.

The ending of both things are basically the same, but “Smile” has so much more impact by shifting the focus and ending it the only way it can really end.

Conclusion

I liked both but “Treehouse” didn’t quite hit the right chords, though it refrained from being offensive. I’d watch it again no problem. So ends my revenge horror comparison.

Treehouse 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

Smile 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)
