Jars is a strategy puzzle game by developer Mousetrap Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment. Released in 2021, it is the first game by Mousetrap Games.

In Jars, you play as a boy experimenting with the variety of jars, bugs, and mysterious substances in the basement. You pop jars to unleash either vicious nasties, helpful minions, or useful items. However, most of the time you have no way of knowing what is in the jar before you open it. You have to be able to think fast if you want to defeat the nasties!

As someone who played a lot of tower defense flash games as a kid, I found Jars to be a little nostalgic. It immediately is reminiscent of Plants vs Zombies in the play style, however it has a bit more variety in terms of level layouts. The art and music are also fun, adding a layer of Tim Burton-esque spooky flair to the game. It is also reasonably priced at $11 on Steam for several hours of content and near infinite replayability.

Jars is an interesting strategy game, however I found the progression to be too slow. New items and minions did not appear very frequently. This meant when I was trying to get through a particularly tricky level, it didnโ€™t feel as if I had many choices on how to give myself an advantage in the set-up. Also, once I had finished a large swath of levels, it didnโ€™t feel as if I had anything to show for it.

If you like Plants vs Zombies or other similar strategy games you would probably enjoy this game. However, if you dislike random chance playing a large part in your success, I would recommend a different game.
