Mom was in the garden. Louis could hear her humming to herself as she puttered her way through the flower bed. She was taking off the canvas tarps that protected her beloved rose bushes through the long winter. Tilling the soil in the flower beds. Working compost into the ground.

It was good to see her active. The winter had been so hard.

It had been hard for Louis, too. After Alex went missing, everything had been hard.

No, he shouldn’t think of that. Better not to dwell, that’s what his therapist said. Better to focus on the now, the here.

Here and now, he had his aging mother to care for. Here and now, he had to live his life. He couldn’t live on just the hope that Alex, his sweet little girl, would be found. There was a chance, wasn’t there always a chance? But better to lay that aside and live.

It would be better now that spring had come. Better for Mom, too. She’d been in bad enough shape before Alex had vanished. But this winter she’d been bad enough that Louis had considered putting her in a facility.

She’d spent most of the winter sitting in a chair by the window, looking out over the back yard. All she’d talked about was what she was going to do with her garden, once it came back to life. How she couldn’t wait to see her roses bloom again.

Now she could putter in the garden to her heart’s content.

Mom was heading inside. Her movement caught Louis’s attention, rousing him from his musings. She disappeared through the sliding glass door, probably to fetch a drink or sit down in the cool indoors for a few minutes. He was glad to see her do it. It meant she was taking care of herself.

Louis ambled over to her garden to see her handiwork. There soil was all overturned now, fresh and ready for planting. Sitting next to the overturned ground was a crate of flowers. Daffodils, marigolds, black eyed susans. They were bright, cheerful. Louis kneeled to run a finger over their petals.

He picked up a spade and started digging a hole to place the first flower. This was good, it felt good. He and his mom had spent much of his childhood gardening together. When her mind started getting bad last year, he’d thought it would mean an end to their gardening. But here was the soil and here were the flowers. And there was his mother, washing her hands in the kitchen. It felt really good.

Louis dug the spade into the dirt, pushing it down deep. He shaped the hole, and settled in the first marigold into place.

Mom was at the doorway again. “Stop, stop that,” she gasped.

“Mom, what’s wrong?” Louis asked. He dug into the ground again.

The spade hit something that wasn’t soil. He looked down, confused. He took a few more scoops of soil out of the ground.

There was something there. Something cold, and hard. He kept digging. As he did, a bright yellow bookbag appeared. And with it, a brown head of hair.

Very sad but just as disturbing. Good stuff.

It’s always remarkable what a minor excavation can unearth.

Nightmarish Nature: Scads of Scat, Beyond Just Goose Poo

Published

on

This time on Nightmarish Nature, in honor of Thanksgiving, we’re exploring scads of scat! And not just because of the aftermath of all that eating we’re going to be doing, given that everything that goes in must come out eventually. But because turkeys are weird.

But, how weird?

Apparently, the shape and size of a turkey’s poop can tell you the sex and age of the bird. Male and female birds poop different shaped turds, and bigger ones with age. Your poop can’t do that, we’re pretty sure. And no, we don’t want to check, even if it does come in a whole host of rainbow colors with all the dyes in our food nowadays. Keep your weird quirks to yourself.

Fecal Fetishes

Vultures have very acidic scat that helps to keep their feet and food clean of bacteria from hopping in and around dead things. Somehow, this doesn’t seem like a step up to us, but I guess if you’re a carrion crawler you take what you can get. At least you’d know where it’s been I suppose, and that’s more than you can say for some of your long dead food sources…

Rabbits must process their food twice in order to break down the grassy matter they digest (like cows chewing cud). And so they eat their own partially digested matter, the cecotropes they produce after the first digestion. This isn’t true poop per se, that fecal matter comes after second digestion, but it does work its way through the same way.

And that brings us to koalas. They are one of only a few mammals that can eat eucalyptus leaves (and are closely related to wombats, one of the other two). Koala offspring eat their mother’s pap, which is a specialized form of poop that allows the baby to transition from nursing milk to eating solid leaves. It is green, smeary, mushy, and can get everywhere. Just like you’d expect.

We aren’t exempt.

For all that we have learned to be poop averse, a lot of animals eat others’ scat and glean a lot of nutritional value from their detritus. It’s not just your dog raiding the cat litter box and then licking you in the face. And we humans have even fought wars over rights to seabird guano, which was used as a form of fertilizer in the late 1800s.

Anyway, that’s the scoop on poop for now. Maybe we’ll revisit this load later on, seeing as how there’s still plenty of content here.

Religious Icons Revisited for the Second Second Coming

Published

on

Those religious icons really get around. This time it’s a journey to visit the Deep Ones. And Dracula’s Castle. Because everyone has to be a tourist now and then, and what’s the point if you don’t pick up a souvenir or two?

New religious icons – Jesus Christ visits Cthulhu and the Deep Ones

This was a gift for a friend for their sea life monster theme bathroom. It started as one of those old school wood plaques where the picture is waxed on. And the eyes were originally that creepy – all I did was add the tentacles. So don’t blame the overall weirdness on me, it wasn’t all my doing.

Oh, and apparently Mary wanted in on the action, so she’s gone to Dracula’s Castle for a bite. She even brought back her own religious icons souvenirs…

So this one isn’t as old, nor is it real wood. But it still totally goes with Mary’s journey. And it’s also a little blacklight reactive with the flowers.

Repaint Porcelain Figs Plus by Jennifer Weigel

Published

So I just keep on going… Here are some more repaint porcelain figurines and other madcap painting. OK maybe some of them aren’t porcelain, but still totally redone.

Pennywise It Clown repaint by Jennifer Weigel
Pennywise It Clown repaint by Jennifer Weigel

This Pennywise clown started as some plastic figurine from Italy. I was drawn to this because of the pretty marble base. It’s a nice touch, don’t you think? I’ve seen others in this series and honestly they’re all kind of creepy to start with, so they really lend themselves towards repaint prospects. Perhaps I’ll pick up more to redo in similar ways later on… Oh, and the eyes are blacklight sensitive, in case he wasn’t creepy enough already.

With all of the new movie hype, I couldn’t resist a throwback to the classic Beetlejuice, and this little bride figurine and teddy bear were just too perfect. Featuring more blacklight sensitive accents, like her veil flowers. And I don’t know why she only has one glove, I blame it on the 1980s… Or maybe she was just that drunk (you’d have to be for that wedding)…

So yeah, all those preppers ready for the zombie apocalypse – you know some of them are gonna get bitten. It’s in the script, what can I say? More blacklight eyes, cause why not?

Abigail vampire ballerina repaint by Jennifer Weigel

I admit I haven’t seen this film, but it sure looks fun. Mathilda, eat your heart out. Literally.

Sexy Sadie by Jennifer Weigel

OK so this isn’t a repaint. Nor is it porcelain. What is it even doing here? Well, she’s cool and ready for a party and kinda reminded me of Abigail, so she sort of just tagged along. Sexy Sadie started as an Avon perfume bottle with a fragrance I didn’t care for (I think it was called Head Over Heels). Because honestly the bottle topper was all that mattered. And now she has her own disco dancing platform. What more could a vampish vixen want?
