Mad Experiments: Escape Room is the first of two co-op escape room games by PlayTogether Studio. The studio specializes in cooperative games, with the Mad Experiments games being one of their primary properties.
ย In Mad Experiments: Escape Room you go through three different escape rooms to unravel the mysteries of Professor Chesire. Each room has a separate theme and lends itself to the overarching plot. Within the rooms, players solve a variety of puzzles to unlock the next room and dig further into the mystery.
As someone who loves escape rooms, I found this game to be worthwhile. I was particularly fond of the third puzzle room, which had the most interesting puzzles and the theme of being a toy in a child’s bedroom. In virtual escape rooms, it is most engaging when games try concepts that wouldnโt be possible in real life. Mad Experiments: Escape Room was most successful when it was sticking to that idea. My partner and I finished each puzzle in under an hour, with a total play time of 2.5 hours.ย
The biggest issues I had with the game was that the puzzles could be very obtuse. The clues were not always very helpful which meant we usually spent half of our time on a single puzzle in the room and breezed past the others. Additionally, there were only a couple puzzles in the first two rooms, which left me asking, โWas that it?โ once we escaped. That being said, I thought the third room was really well done with many puzzles that felt reasonably challenging and engaging. I would be excited to play the sequel game if those puzzles are the same quality as the third room. Something else to consider would be the price point of $15 on Steam. While I would recommend giving it a shot, I would also encourage you to get the game when it is on sale.
While the game was entertaining, I felt as if the content could have used a little fine tuning. If you like escape rooms, I would say you would probably get a kick out of the game. However, if you are easily frustrated by confusing puzzles or red herrings this may not be the game for you.
