By the release of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels on April 26th it will be almost four years since the end of the first series. I’m hoping that this means Showtime took the time to build up this story to be as solid as their first series. Let’s take a look at the trailer.

The Setting…

As the trailer says, the series takes in 1938 Los Angeles. Various locations around LA including the LA River and courthouse as well as outlying farming areas will likely not be the only places we see. Knowing that much of this series is based on Mexican culture, it’s likely a trip into Mexico will come up.

The Themes…

This series will focus heavily on Mexican culture evident by the poster design. The face’s of the bodies found in the LA river have been disfigured to look like sugar skulls. At minute 0:32, a Mexican woman prays before an alter adorned like a Dead of the Day shrine.

The violent race relations between the Mexican workers and Law Enforcement are front and center. With the inclusion of what are probably Nazi sympathizers (I don’t think they’ll be members of the Third Reich), the non-supernatural agitators will be plenty. There is also the inclusion of a Evangelist (seen at minute 0:42) who will be a large part in the series.

The Players…

Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games) will portray the series supernatural being. A demon going by the name Magda, she is likely what was summon during the ritual at the alter. Nathen Lane plays an older homicide detective while Daniel Zovatto is a Mexican detective recently assigned to the Homicide Division. The dynamic between Lane and Zovatto will likely play into the racial themes of the series.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels at First Glance…

So it’s been reported that this series will not tie back into the original. We won’t be seeing Frankenstein or Dorian Gray in this series but that’s ok. It’s likely this series will be introducing a whole culture’s worth of folk lore and I’m very much looking forward to that. If the writers truly took their time and put the effort into making this series something special, I can wait to see it.
