App based horror is the new childhood games based horror (al a Truth or Dare and Would You Rather) of our times. I’ll admit I was skeptical of the advertisements for 2019’s Countdown. It felt a little too reminiscent of The Ring and One Missed Call, but worse. To my surprise Countdown is a decent gore-free thriller.

The acting is good and the almost necessary-these-days injected humor is a relief and works. Even with a silly premise and PG-13 rating, Countdown is a pretty good time. By the end you care about the characters and you’re rooting for them to win.

The human drama of the protagonist is pretty unnecessary but I guess there needed to be a B-story. The introduction of a secondary protag is where the movie picks up, and I appreciate the risks it took.

With an IMDB rating of 5.3/10, Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer of 25% and Audience Score of 72%, I give Countdown a 7.0/10.
