In the final episode of American Horror Story Freak Show, we’re treated to a real variety show. There’s music, magic, a wedding. There’s also quite a lot of blood.

We start with Dandy at the Freak Show. He is his charming self as always. In a matter of a few short minutes, he drives every one of the freaks to quit. Dandy responds how anyone would expect this spoiled man-child to respond. He goes on a killing spree, murdering almost all of the freaks.

He kidnaps Bette and Dot. And for a moment it seems like he’s going to get exactly what he wants. We see them at the altar, getting married. And everyone seems happy about this.

Then, we remember that not all of the freaks were killed. Desiree and Jimmy survived. And the four of them get revenge on Dandy. Desiree even tells Dandy exactly what I’ve been saying all season. It’s Dandy who’s the real freak.

I don’t think I ever felt better about watching someone drown in their underwear.

This leaves Bette, Dot, Desiree, and Jimmy to live happily ever after.

Ah, but what about our headliner? What about Elsa?

She went off to Hollywood. And, after a rocky start, she finally gets her dream. She gets her Elsa Mars Hour. She gets a handsome husband, a beautiful house. Even her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And of course, none of this means a damned thing, because she still doesn’t have any love in her life.

But even this hollow happiness can’t last. After refusing to do a Halloween episode, her entire horrifying past comes to light. Somehow being abducted and having her legs chopped off while being filmed, is her fault. She loses her contract. She’s going to lose her show.

And so, she decides to do the Halloween show. She knows exactly what this will mean, even if no one else does.

Edward Mordrake comes for her. Elsa thinks that she’ll find her true family among these freaks from beyond the grave. But there isn’t a place for her among Edward’s Freak Show.

Elsa has her own Freak Show waiting for her. With all of her children. And they’re all happy to see her. They’ve missed their headliner. And she has missed them.

This ending was sweet, warm, and bloody as hell. It was the perfect ending to a season I loved more than I thought I would. But I’m feeling like I need a bit of a vacation. Maybe a stay at a hotel.
