Welcome to the year 2021. We’re continuing our monthly highlights on Shudder into the new year. So what is going to be streaming this month in each region? Let’s find out together, shall we?
Shudder originals and exclusives will be presented in bold.
Shudder CA
This month Shudder presents a number of films, but for the Canadian highlights, we are going to run with the Shudder/Sundance exclusive A Discovery of Witches. This series is one of Shudder’s “classier” series adapted from Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy. The series stars Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode and follows a historian who discovers her witchy heritage and attracts the interest of a mysterious vampire scientist. If you are trying to get a friend into horror and the supernatural you could do worse than a supernaturally-tinged sexy drama. The first four episodes of season two stream this month.

Shudder US
Shudder US and CA are very close when it comes to what is offered with a few exceptions. The biggest difference is that Shudder US will make the entire first season of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, available to stream. This spinoff is a limited series that takes place about a decade after the apocalypse of the main Walking Dead series. The series shows how life is for a generation raised among the undead.

Shudder UK
The offerings are a little thinner on Shudder UK this month, but two Shudder originals, Hunted and The Queen of Black Magic are available to stream. The UK highlight for this month is Hunted. The synopsis reads: What started as a flirtatious encounter at a bar turns into a life-or-death struggle as Eve (Lucie Debay) becomes the unknowing target of a misogynistic plot against her. Forced to flee as two men pursue her through the forest, she’s pushed to her extremes while fighting to survive in the wilderness—but survival isn’t enough for Eve. She will have revenge.

Shudder ANZ
Shudder’s ANZ offerings finally include the fantastic Color Out of Space, but some other great titles are up for viewing. As for the highlight for the month, The Queen of Black Magic should be worth a watch. This is another Joko Anwar title for Shudder’s streaming library and looks to be just as scary as his previous films Satan’s Slaves and Impetigore. Ario Bayu, Hannah Al Rashid, Adhisty Zara, Ari Irham and Muzakki Ramdhan star in this new Shudder original. The synopsis reads: A family travels to the distant, rural orphanage where the father was raised to pay their respects to the facility’s gravely ill director. But his and his best friends’ homecoming turns into a terrifying supernatural ordeal that threatens their and their families’ lives: someone is using dark magic to avenge evil deeds, long buried but not forgotten. Stamboel’s film is a reimagining of the 1981 Indonesian horror classic of the same name.

If you live in the United States, it’s time to rock the vote for real. I shared this video before in conjunction with my identity-based costume work, and I feel it’s important to revisit now, with the election coming up in just a few days. Besides which, Jack Black and Tenacious D are brilliant and given the current political climate, who doesn’t want to do the time warp? But seriously, get out and rock the vote, your life kinda does depend on it (at least insomuch as being able to make for yourself the life that you want, without the government telling you how to do so – especially if you live on the fringes of socially acceptable awkwardness like me and so many of my friends).
Besides which, this video is so good, it’s worth sharing again anyway. And again, if for some reason the video doesn’t load, you can find it here.
Art Attack
And here are some artworks I made awhile back as political commentary. The photograph was shot of the scene exactly as found, of a sign above a parking lot in a quickly gentrifying neighborhood making sure all knew that any unauthorized vehicles were unwelcome, and hung right in front of a flag that was tattered and torn from being caught on the chain link fence driving the point home. The flags were meant to be interactive, with gallerygoers waving them while singing The Star Spangled Banner in its elitist entirety. The whole really spoke to me regarding some of the political climate at the time (this was right before Trump was elected President the first time). How much has changed since then? In some ways, a lot. In other ways, I guess we shall see.
