2019’s Pet Sematary succumbs to the frustrating marketing machine that sacrifices enjoyment for interest. The trailer creators have no idea what audiences want in a movie. Their only concern is putting butts in seats. And so the Pet Sematary rebake becomes another classic tale of giving away the twist in the trailer.
As a different adaption of Stephen Kings’ source material thankfully not everything is spoiled in this latest version. But a big chunk of the movie’s emotional investment and the entire third act are driven completely by the twist put on full display in the promotions.
This film is not a complete waste of time, surprisingly. It’s actually pretty engaging and leaves some questions to be answered. There is some backstory hinted at that deepens the lore of the call of the Windego that haunts these ancient burial grounds.
With an IMDB rating of 5.9/10 and Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer of 57% and Audience Score of 36%, I give Pet Sematary a 6.7/10.
