If you know anything about me, you know I love monsters of all sizes. Tyrannosaurus Rex, Godzilla, Jaws, Gremlins, Teen Wolf, you get the idea. So the Antlers trailer definitely caught my attention just on the possibility of who the featured monster could be…

I don’t know about you, but this monster sounds like the wendigo! And the wendigo definitely needs more screen time.

What the hell is a “wendigo”?

I’m glad you asked!

The wendigo is a monster that originated in the folklore of the Algonquin, a collection of native Canadian tribes. The monster is known to be greedy, insatiable, and most importantly, hungry for the flesh of humans. Sometimes the wendigo is an evil spirit possessing the body of a man, sometimes it’s a greedy man turned into a cannibalistic monster. I learned about the wendigo as a kid reading X-Men comics and after a bit of research, learned it was typically less like this…

Natural enemy: Alpha Flight

And more like this…

Natural enemy: Pretty much everyone.

Who? What? Where? Why? Wendigo?

We can’t quite answer all of the 5 W’s about the film just yet, but we know enough to get excited. The release of Antlers is still a fair bit away (2020), but the end of the year is coming up fast. We’ve also got a fair bit of information regarding the cast and crew. The movie stars Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Dark Skies) and Jeremy T. Thomas (Your Worst Nightmare), along with Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo). The film’s director, Scott Cooper (Black Mass), is teaming up with writer Nick Antosca (Hannibal).

Who knows? Maybe this movie isn’t about a wendigo at all. And if it isn’t, it still looks great! I just won’t be able to talk about my old X-Men comics as easily waiting outside the theater to see it. What do you think about the Antlers trailer?
