Nothing says “Summer!” quite like lush valleys, huge banquets, levitation, disemboweled creatures… mysterious liquid strangers force you to drink… Hold on a second…

Whats going on in Midsommar? What IS Midsommar?

Midsummer, or Midsommar, is the celebration of the Summer Solstice in Northern European countries. Specifically in Sweden, it’s a time for celebration, typically involving a maypole, as seen in the trailer, and it’s seen as a time of good fortune and health. Emphasis on typically.

Who’s taking the trip?
The movie stars Jack Reynor (Dollhouse) and Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth, King Lear and the upcoming Black Widow currently in production) as the vacationing couple. It also includes several other familiar faces, including Will Poulter, who you may recognize from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The plot synopsis of the film involves a couple who seem to be having some difficulties go on a retreat to enjoy the Swedish holiday, despite initial reluctance. Upon their arrival, their greeted with warm smiles and a bit of history before really digging into the traditional ceremony. That’s when things start to get a bit weird. The rituals become a competition for the hosting pagan cult and things quickly spiral out of control for the visitors.

From an enormous banquet, to being forced to drink unknown fluids, a split-open carcass and a sequence of hard stares, it becomes clear that our protagonists are in for a bit more than the guide might have promised. And if Hereditary is anything to go by, things build slowly, but the last act absolutely explodes!
