Shudder has confirmed that their weekly horror show, The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs will return for a second season.

This news is a welcome treat before the season finale of the show, this Friday, on Shudder. The finale airs May 24 at 9pm ET/6pm PT.

The show is a weekly double-feature of typically horror-adjacent films that are introduced and interrupted by host Joe Bob Briggs. Prior to The Last Drive-In, Joe Bob Briggs was best known as the host of TNT’s MonsterVision and contributor to The Daily Show. During the show Joe Bob is typically accompanied by a “mail girl” who provides him letters from fans.

The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs is an anomaly is streaming entertainment. Not only is it a revival of the classic horror-host genre, but it is a show offered on streaming service that is considered appointment viewing, only adding episodes on Fridays. The first revival of the show, the original marathon, proved so popular that it crashed Shudder’s servers and inspired two holiday-centered marathons later that year. The success of The Last Drive-In is a win for Shudder’s building of a library of original content.

The show is also very popular on social media, often trending on Twitter as the “mutant family” of fans riff the show during the live stream. The chaos is managed by the show’s resident Mail Girl, Darcy, who often serves as the social media face of the show.

Reactions from the Drive-In crew

The ScreenRant article announcing the second season featured a statement from Joe Bob Briggs.

It hasn’t even been a full year since the 24-hour Last Drive-In marathon, but since then I’ve made thousands of new friends and reconnected with thousands of old ones. The main reason I’m coming back to do another season is that this community of horror fans is greater than the sum of its parts, and it’s about something larger than horror. Don’t ask me what that thing is, but it’s a source of great joy to me.

Darcy the Mail Girl shared this special video announcing the second season. Please enjoy it and let us know how excited you are for the return of The Last Drive-In.

Haunted MTL will continue to post recaps of the series as season two airs.
