This is how the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.

-TS Eliot

Thus begins one of my favorite novels, The Stand. It came to mind a lot while watching this episode of Dexter. I wouldn’t say his world is coming to an end, but it’s certainly going to fundamentally change. His old life ended not with a bang or a whimper. It ended with a wide-eyed stare as the person who knew him best fully saw him for the first time.

But let’s go back to the beginning.

Dexter is pretty sure at the start of the episode that he’s going to die. He’s floating in the middle of the ocean with no hope of rescue. He is found at last by a boat bringing people into Miami from Mexico. One of the women tells him that God wanted them to find him. That must be true because halfway through the journey, the man in charge of the boat threatens to kill anyone who can’t give him additional money. Dexter makes short work of him and insures that the boat makes it to shore safely.

Dexter isn’t the only one looking for a safe harbor. Travis has been hiding out in the home of a couple he brutally killed. At least he’s been taking care of their cat. But the police found the bodies, so he can’t go back there. Fortunately for him, he’s got Dexter’s house keys and address.

This leads him to a startling revelation. Dexter has a son.

Dexter also, by the way, has a sister. A sister who’s making some interesting connections in therapy. She’s realized that she’s in love with Dexter. You know, her brother. At least they were raised as brother and sister.

I know it’s not technically incest. But it’s close enough to be cringe-worthy.

After almost drowning, Dexter doesn’t want to do anything but be in the Noah’s Ark play with his son. He and Harrison dress up as lions. But as they’re engaged in make-believe, Travis is looking for one last victim. He’s looking for a lamb. And because sometimes this show has all the subtly of a mac truck, the lamb he finds is little Harrison still in his lion costume.

Dexter arrives in time to save the day and gets Travis packed away to his kill room. But just as he makes the kill, in walks the last person he ever wanted to have seen him like that.

Deb.

Can you imagine having to wait for the next season after a cliffhanger like that? Fortunately, we don’t have to.

See you next time.
