I think myself to be a fairly jaded person. Nothing surprises me. And I’m certainly not one to gasp and clap my hands over my mouth in surprise at a season finale.

Then the ending of this episode happened and I went and lost all my cred.

I’m going to do my best not to ruin it for you.

Maria is sure that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. She’s ready to nail him for it. So she shows up at Dexter’s house and arrests him in front of Harrison. Then, she has the audacity to perp walk him through the precinct in front of all his friends and co-workers.

No one’s super thrilled with her over that. And it just gets worse when the evidence she used to obtain her arrest warrant turns out to be fake.

It’s soon revealed that Dexter made sure she had that false evidence, and that she thought it was real.

Maria is floundering. She wants to prove that Doakes was innocent more than she cares about her job. Dexter thinks he’s got things all figured out. Deb doesn’t think so. And, of course, she’s right.

While they’re dealing with Maria, Hannah’s got her trials. She’s a survivor, and she has no intention of serving her time. She gets a friend to bring her something in the courtroom that she quickly hides in her mouth. I thought at first it was a key until she starts choking in the back seat of the car.

It was a coin toss from there as to whether she was committing suicide or trying to escape. Even now, I’m not sure if she intended to escape, or if she tried to kill herself then escaped when the opportunity arose.

One complaint I’ve always had about Dexter is that the last episodes are formulaic. This one was not that.

I don’t understand how the show will proceed past this. Everything has changed. Not in small ways that add up over time. There are moments in life that split up chapters of time. There is a before, and after. Before and after you decided to get divorced. Before and after medical test results. The end of this episode is one of those moments.

I don’t have any idea what the after is going to look like.
