Variety has recently reported that Amazon and Paramount Television are in the development of an Event Horizon series. Event Horizon was a 1997 sci-fi horror film that, while critically and commercially savaged, developed a cult following.

Alas, Amazon, once more into the breach…

The executive producer and director of the upcoming series, Adam Wingard, is the director of the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong. Other films in his oeuvre include the recent Blair Witch reboot, The Guest, and You’re Next, in addition to Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Death Note.

Joining Wingard in producing will be Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Jeremy Platt. Of note, producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin were both producers of the original Paul W. S. Anderson film.

Event Horizon‘s Cult-Appeal

Event Horizon was not a successful movie at release. The film grossed 26.7 million which did not meet half of the $60 million production budget. However, the film was released shortly after the emergence of the DVD market and sold very well.

Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner, Event Horizon follows the 2047 crew of astronauts on a rescue mission to track down a missing ship, the titular Event Horizon. What follows is a trippy, gory, and disturbing film that some fans have dubbed as an unofficial Warhammer 40K story. Despite a troubled production, the film found success as a cult product, even after a failed attempt at restoring footage deleted from the original film.

Event Horizon stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, and a whole hell of a lot of pointy things.

Amazon’s Genre Dive

Event Horizon is just one of several major horror-genre projects Amazon is investing in. Another Amazon project is the Simon Pegg-Nick Frost series Truth Seekers, a supernatural horror-comedy. Amazon is also producing a horror anthology series titled THEM, from Lena Waithe.

Details beyond the existence of the Event Horizon adaptation are sparse, but Haunted MTL will continue to track the production and share updates. Please be sure to stick around.
